In the Global Products Group, we are dedicated to excellence in the design and engineering of Lam's etch and deposition products. We drive innovation to ensure our cutting-edge solutions are helping to solve the biggest challenges in the semiconductor industry. 

 

The impact you’ll make

The Plasma Source Engineering team at Lam Research is at the forefront of developing advanced plasma reactor technologies, leveraging plasma metrology and computational simulations to guide innovation. Our work is grounded in a deep understanding of scientific principles, enabling us to deliver breakthrough solutions that address some of the most complex challenges in the semiconductor industry. We are seeking candidates who can start in winter or spring 2026 and are available for a 3-6 month long internship.

 

In this role, you’ll engage in foundational research through both hands-on experimentation and computational simulation. Your contributions will directly influence the development of Lam’s next-generation products. This internship offers a rare opportunity to work with cutting-edge engineering technologies at an industrial scale. The experiences and insights you will gain go far beyond what’s offered in an academic environment.

What you’ll do

  • Evaluate plasma reactor performance using optical and electrical diagnostics in laboratory settings.
  • Design and develop new plasma metrology systems to accelerate the product development cycle.
  • Perform computational plasma simulations to deepen understanding of fundamental plasma properties and enhance system performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to support new product development.
  • Prepare high-quality reports and technical presentations to communicate design concepts, analyses, and results to diverse audiences.

Who we’re looking for

  • Current PhD students in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or related fields) or Physics.
  • Educational background in plasma science, demonstrated through hands-on laboratory experience or analytical/computational modeling.
  • We are seeking candidates who can start in winter or spring 2026 and are available for a 3-6 month long internship.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with plasma diagnostics and/or plasma simulations.
  • Proficiency in data acquisition using MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, etc.
  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration across teams.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Our hybrid roles combine the benefits of on-site collaboration with colleagues and the flexibility to work remotely and fall into two categories – On-site Flex and Virtual Flex. ‘On-site Flex’ you’ll work 3+ days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, with the opportunity to work remotely for the balance of the week. ‘Virtual Flex’ you’ll work 1-2 days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, and remotely the rest of the time.
